Morrow County School District officially kicked off the 2026–27 school year with its annual district inservice at the SAGE Event Center in Boardman, bringing together educators, staff, and leadership to celebrate collaboration, recognize excellence, and set a positive tone for the year ahead.
The morning opened with a snack bar sponsored by AWS, giving colleagues time to reconnect after summer break. Superintendent Combe and Board Member Ashley Lindsay welcomed staff back, followed by remarks from union representatives who emphasized unity, mutual support, and the importance of strong relationships in driving student success.
A core highlight of the event was honoring exceptional staff achievements from the past year. In addition to celebrating Educators of the Year and Crystal Apple Award recipients, the district recognized milestone service awards for employees with five or more years of dedication. Four staff members were given special recognition for exceeding three decades of service:
Claude Birt (RHS Art Teacher) – 31 years
Cindy Turner (ACH Secretary) – 32 years
Tracy Gordanier (RJSHS Educational Assistant) – 35 years
Jody Marston (RJSHS Registrar/Department Secretary) – 39 years
The program concluded with a keynote presentation from three distinguished district alumni who shared how Morrow County educators shaped their lives through enthusiasm, accountability, and mentorship:
Dr. Emily Jack (Heppner Class of 2010), Morrow County Health District practitioner supporting countywide healthcare initiatives.
Omar Murillo (Riverside Class of 2013), Portland-area Assistant Controller and 2028 Olympic boxing hopeful.
Caren Cardenas (Irrigon Class of 2023), Oregon State University Civil Engineering student specializing in water resources and environmental engineering.
